Falcons beat Cameroon


The Super Falcons of Nigeria on Saturday defeated Cameroon 2-0 to win the ninth edition of the African Women Championship in Windhoek, Namibia. The goals from Desire Oparanozie and Asisat Oshoala were all Nigeria needed to reclaim the AWC title. After a dominant opening period, Oparanozie put the Super Falcons in front in the 12th minute with a superb free-kick. Oshoala then doubled Nigeria’s lead two minutes from the end of an enthralling first half. NAN recalls that only twice since the inaugural AWC in 1998 had Nigeria failed to win the trophy. Equatorial Guinea are the only other winners, in 2008 and 2012, and they failed to qualify for this year’s tournament. Nigeria and Cameroon had already qualified for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Canada by reaching the final. They will be joined there by Cote d’Ivoire who had earlier in the day beaten South Africa 1-0 in the third-place match. In an even contest, also played in Windhoek, Rebecca Ida scored the winning goal six minutes from full time. She pounced on a loose ball in the Banyana Banyana penalty area from a corner kick, and slotted the ball home. The championship which kicked off on October 11 came to an end on Saturday.

Iran hangs woman in defiance of international campaign

Iran executed Saturday a 26-year-old woman who had spent five years on death row for the murder of a former intelligence official, defying international pressure to spare her life. Reyhaneh Jabbari was hanged at dawn, the official IRNA news agency quoted the Tehran prosecutor’s office as saying. A message posted on the homepage of a Facebook campaign that was set up to try to save her, but which now states “Rest in Peace,” confirmed the report. Amnesty International said in a statement issued late Friday that Jabbari, an interior designer, was due to be executed for the 2007 stabbing of Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi. A UN human rights monitor had said the killing of Sarbandi was an act of self-defence after he tried to sexually assault Jabbari, and that her trial in 2009 had been deeply flawed.
