Serena Williams Fined For US. Open Final Outburst


During her Saturday defeat to Japan’s Naomi Osaka 6-2 6-4 in the final match of the competition, Williams was penalized for on-court coaching and a point penalty for breaking her racquet before a heated confrontation with umpire Carlos Ramos ended with her losing a game.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) had said on Sunday that Serena Williams has been fine $17,000 for the code violation penalty she received U.S. Open final.
During her Saturday defeat to Japan’s Naomi Osaka 6-2 6-4 in the final match of the competition, Williams was penalized for on-court coaching and a point penalty for breaking her racquet before a heated confrontation with umpire Carlos Ramos ended with her losing a game.
The tournament referee’s office fined the former world number one 10,000 dollars for the “verbal abuse” of Ramos, 4,000 dollars for being warned for coaching and 3,000 dollars for smashing her racket.
Williams who vehemently argued against each of the violations during the match, was out to win her 24th Grand Slam singles title on Saturday.

Iran hangs woman in defiance of international campaign

Iran executed Saturday a 26-year-old woman who had spent five years on death row for the murder of a former intelligence official, defying international pressure to spare her life. Reyhaneh Jabbari was hanged at dawn, the official IRNA news agency quoted the Tehran prosecutor’s office as saying. A message posted on the homepage of a Facebook campaign that was set up to try to save her, but which now states “Rest in Peace,” confirmed the report. Amnesty International said in a statement issued late Friday that Jabbari, an interior designer, was due to be executed for the 2007 stabbing of Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi. A UN human rights monitor had said the killing of Sarbandi was an act of self-defence after he tried to sexually assault Jabbari, and that her trial in 2009 had been deeply flawed.
